lyrics

In Banbridge town, in the County Down
one morning last July
Down a boreen green, came a sweet Coleen
she smiled as she passed me by
she looked so sweet from her two bare feet
to the sheen of her nut brown hair
such a coaxing elf, sure I shook myself
to be sure she was really there

From Banbridge town to Derry Que
From Galway to Dublin town
no Maid I've seen like the sweet Colleen
I met at the County Down

As she onward sped sure I scratched my head
I was struck with a feeling rare
so I said said I to a passer by
"Who's that maid with the nut brown hair"
he smiled at me with pride said he "that's the gem of Irelands crown"
that's young Rosie McCann fro the banks of the ban,
she 's the star of the county down"

At the Harvest fair she'll sure be there
so I'll dress in my Sunday clothes
with my shoes shone bright and my hat
cocked right
with a smile for my nut brown rose
no pipe I'll smoke
no horse I'lll yoke
till my plough turns a rusty brown
and a smiling bride by my fire side
sits the star of the county down
