I wrote this song after I'd read about the massacre of the MacDonald clan at Glencoe, in 1692. After being troublesome to the English king, a rival clan were paid to murder the MacDonalds. The MacDonald Clan, like all highlanders, didn't lock their doors at night when they slept, and so the rival clan managed to creep in and slit their throats as they slept.
lyrics
In Glencoe, MacDonald, dwelt in misty swirls on the braes
owned the land, ruled the clan, ruled the braes.
Till the kings men in their red coats, with thundering hoof and sword
took the land, taxed the crops, jailed our lords.
The highlander code, don't bar the door,
he who enters will be a friend,
See our red and green standard,
MacDonald defend
The right to our freedom, our peace, our own ends
Till a Kingsman, sent a clansman, with wiley smiles who said
"here's an oath signed in blood", yes and oath, signed in blood,
"drop your swords, end this war, peace will reign".
The highlander code, don't bar the door
he who enters will be a friend
now peaceful our slumber
easy our dreams, no enemy lurking we're safe now it seems
ahh
In Glencoe, MacDonald died in misty swirls on the braes,
lost the land, lost the clan, lost the braes
when the kings men in their black cloaks
crept in at night as we lay
see the land washed in blood
see the clan washed in blood
torched the thatch, torched the crops
red the braes.
The highlander code, don't bar the door
he who enters will be a friend
See our red and green standard
see our banner alight
taken in slumber taken at night
ah ah
