Skye Boat Song

from by Christine Weir

This is a Scottish Traditional song, it describes the flight of Bonny Prince Charlie as he escaped from the English army, disguised as a woman, in a boat, over the seas to the Isle of Skye

Billow and breeze, Islands and seas
mountains of rain and sun
all that was good, all that was fair
all that was me, is gone
sing me a song of a lad that is gone
say could that lad be I
merry of soul he sailed on a day
over the seas to Skye

Loud the winds howl
loud the waves roar
thunderclaps rend the air
baffled our foes
stand by the shores
follow they will not dare

Speed bonny boat like a bird on the wing
onward the sailors cry
carry the lad who's born to be king
over the seas, to Skye

All t hat was good
all that was fair
over the seas to Skye
